Mukiya Post spent his childhood split between rural Jamaica and a small city in Western Canada. Shortly after settling down in Canada, Mukiya fell in love with basketball. As his love developed, so did his ambitions, as he added playing college basketball to his list of aspirations.

At this time, he was averaging a mere 4 points per game on one of the worst teams in his district. Realizing that his current high school was not conducive to this longer-term goal, he considered transferring to a better basketball school.

Before transferring, he sought advice from his coach and teammates. His coach told him, “stay here and play, or transfer and get cut.” His teammates doubled down on his coach’s thoughts, responding “that [he] had a zero percent chance of making the team.”

His coaches’ and teammates’ responses ignited a fire within him and he enrolled at that new high school. He spent his entire summer training and playing basketball.

He didn’t have much of an idea where he stood compared to others at his new school. But within the first tryout, he knew he belonged. He more than belonged; he was the second best player on the team to the number 1 ranked point guard in the province. He went on to start every game that season and lead his team in scoring.

Fast forward to the end of his senior season. He was awarded a provincial all-star, averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. He’d increased his scoring from 4 points per game as a freshman to 24 points per game as a senior; a 6X increase!  His team made it to the provincial championships, finishing in 6th place. And most importantly, he earned a scholarship to play in college.

In college, he was underrated and under-recruited. He used this to his advantage, dedicating himself even more to his craft. Once again, he increased his points per game from 3 in his freshman year, to nearly 18 by his senior year. Once again, a nearly 6X increase!

In addition to basketball, Mukiya always had a drive to give back, which influenced him to participate in numerous volunteer projects in high school. In university, this drive to give back manifested itself in several mediums; including the founding of his own non-profit, mentoring youth, and coaching. Mukiya continues to give back via his non-profit “Pass the Ball Foundation.”

Mukiya eventually went on to earn a full academic scholarship to the University of Miami’s School of Law, completing his Juris Doctor and Masters in Law in Real Property Development. Relying on the same principles he developed and refined through basketball, he graduated and passed the bar exam on his first attempt.

The next chapter of Mukiya’s life saw him achieve another one of his life goals, as he got an opportunity to play professional basketball in Africa and Canada. After retiring, Mukiya joined a nonprofit where he provided support for youth struggling with mental health. It was during this time that Mukiya realized that he had a deeper purpose, as fate pushed him towards his true purpose in helping and inspiring others.

At first, he did not know exactly what that looked like. But over time, he developed it by combining another significant passion of his: basketball. Mukiya now uses the game as a medium to help inspire skill and character development, while giving back to underprivileged communities
